Business owner

If you are a business owner, who owns or leases a commercial property in the city you can vote in the council elections. You could be sharing the property with another business.

Refer to the Corporations page if you own or lease the property as a corporation through an ACN.

If you have previously enrolled as a business owner in the City of Melbourne, you may already be enrolled and you should check your enrolment.

Council uses its records to enrol individuals who live in Australia and have exclusive ownership or lease of a property in the City of Melbourne.

If you are enrolled, you do not need to do anything. A ballot pack will be mailed to you when it is time to vote.

Property owners

If you live in Australia, you must vote in the 2024 Council elections. Council uses its records to enrol up to two owners of rateable property. Failure to vote may result in a fine.

If you live overseas, you are eligible to vote in the 2024 council elections but must register your enrolment to vote.

If you would like to be excluded from voting because you are living overseas, please email our City of Melbourne elections Support Team at elections@melbourne.vic.gov.au

Commercial leases

If you live in Australia and your business holds a commercial lease in the City of Melbourne, you are eligible to vote in the 2024 Council elections. Council uses its records to enrol up to two eligible occupiers of commercial property.

  • If you live in the City of Melbourne, you should use your eligibility as a resident of the municipality. Please refer to the residents and owners page for further information on your voting entitlements.

Once enrolled, you must vote in the 2024 Council elections or you may be fined.

Up to two individuals in a leasing agreement are permitted to be enrolled per property. Each person gets one vote.
